‘Twas the night before football camp, when all through the dorm
All the players had arrived, ready to perform.
The helmets were hung in the lockers with care,
In hopes that Tulane’s first practice soon would be there.

The athletes were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of interceptions and touchdowns danced in their heads.
And Coach Toledo with his straw hat and the staff ready too,
Had just finished meetings, the day finally through.

When out on the practice field there arose such a clatter,
They sprang from the Squad Room to see what was the matter.
Away to the field they flew like a flash,
They threw open the doors, in a mad dash.

When, what to their wondering eyes should appear,
But everything for a productive practice, right down to the gear!
There were two on the field, ready for the Wave,
The coaches knew in a moment it must be Tommy and Dave.

Stations were set to the pleasure of the coaches
As the first practice nearly approaches.
They were all set to go with tackling dummies abound
In hopes that our Line on opponents would pound.

Tommy saw to it they’d be dressed from their heads to their cleat
The team was prepared for the drills they would repeat
A bag full of footballs Dave had flung on his back,
He set some aside for Kemp at quarterback.

Toledo turned to his staff, to his coaches gave a smile,
Yes football season returned and would be here for a while.
And they heard him exclaim, ‘ere he walked out of sight,
“Happy camp to all, and to all a good-night!”
